Words from Residents & Families

A selection of what residents and family members have shared with us over the past months.

LC

Lam Choi-Yee

Daughter of resident, Tuen Mun

"My mother has been at Yuet Wah for seven months now. She has always been particular about food — especially the soup. Within the first two weeks, the kitchen had already adjusted the soup base to something closer to what she makes at home. That told me everything I needed to know about how they operate."

Wong Tai-Lok

Son of resident, Sha Tin

"We chose Yuet Wah because it did not feel like a hospital. The courtyard is beautiful in the early morning and my father is outside every day now — something he had stopped doing at home. The staff remember his name and he is no longer lonely. That is what we were hoping for."

Kwok Mei-Ling

Resident, Tuen Mun

"I was hesitant at first — I thought I was too independent for a place like this. But the arrangement here is not about giving things up. I keep my own timetable. I just do not have to think about cooking or cleaning. The tea house in the afternoon is my favourite part of the day."

CS

Chan Siu-Fan

Granddaughter of resident, Kowloon

"We visit my grandmother every Saturday afternoon and she always has something to tell us about the week — who sat next to her at lunch, what was in the garden. She talks more now than she did living alone. I did not expect that. Mei-Kwan has been wonderful in keeping us informed too."

Yip Hin-Wai

Son of resident, New Territories

"The Full Comfort Residence is worth every dollar. My father had been managing alone after my mother passed and the house was becoming difficult. Moving here meant his laundry is done, his room is clean, meals are ready — and he has people around him. He settled in within a fortnight."

LF

Lee Fung-Yi

Daughter of resident, Tuen Mun

"I had concerns about my mother being far from the kitchen — she has always been the one who cooked for everyone. But Ho-Fung invited her to suggest dishes during her first month and she now considers herself a consultant to the menu. It made her feel at home faster than anything else could have."

Resident Journeys

Three accounts of how families found Yuet Wah and what changed when their relative moved in.

The Situation

An Elderly Man Living Alone After Loss

Mr Cheung, 81, had been living alone in Tuen Mun since his wife passed. His daughter in Sha Tin noticed he was skipping meals and spending most of each day at home without company. He was reluctant to move.

The Approach

A Trial Stay & Gradual Introduction

The family arranged a two-week trial through the Full Comfort Residence programme. The team introduced Mr Cheung to other residents at his own pace and made a point of matching him with others who shared his interest in chess.

After Three Months

More Settled Than the Family Expected

Mr Cheung joined the afternoon tea sitting on day four and has not missed one since. His daughter says he rings her with news of the residence rather than complaints of loneliness. His appetite has returned fully.

"I thought I was doing him a favour. It turned out I was doing us both one." — His daughter

The Situation

A Couple Seeking One Arrangement for Both

Mr and Mrs Ho, both in their late seventies, wanted to live in the same residence without being separated into different programmes. The wife used a walking frame; the husband was in good health and wanted outdoor time each morning.

The Approach

Individual Tailoring Within One Package

Both entered the Full Comfort Residence. Mrs Ho's room was arranged for ease of movement, and courtyard paths near the entrance were confirmed clear. Mr Ho joined morning walks on his first day; Mrs Ho joined at her own pace over two weeks.

Ongoing

Different Rhythms, Same Household

The couple have their own daily routines but share all meals and afternoon tea. They have been residents for over a year. Their son says the decision removed significant worry from the whole family.

"They are genuinely at ease here." — Their son
